At the Community Delegation, Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey accepted a folder of written and email requests from Local State Member Chris Whiting in the presence of the Community Delegation including representatives of the Mango Hill Progress Association and local residents, advocating and petitioning for the Rothwell Roundabout to be upgraded as a matter of urgency.

Standing by the side of the busy (noisy) roundabout on a Saturday afternoon, residents left the Minister in no doubt as to the urgency for the project’s completion and sought assurances that additional funding would be approved in the 2016 State Budget.

In his response to local residents, the Minister indicated that the State Government supported the project and although there was a $10m shortfall in current funding, he would discuss submissions by the Mango Hill Progress Association and local residents with his Director General as a matter of urgency with the aim of a positive outcome with funds to be approved in the upcoming State Budget to expedite this vital upgrade.

Luke Howarth, MP for Petrie and Chris Whiting, MP for Murrumba were at the Community Delegation, advocating for this vital infrastructure.

Contributions from Federal, State and the Moreton Bay Regional Council had totaled $27.2 million. The onus has been on the State Government to commit the remaining money required for the project to get off the ground.

NBN Delivery Community Forum

The Big Local team attended the NBN Community Forum last week, hosted by MP Luke Howarth and Federal Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.

NBN Co. and Telstra representatives were also on hand to answer questions posed by community members.

Mango Hill NBN Rollout

The informative session outlined the expected dates of NBN services to be delivered to premises across North Lakes and Mango Hill. Portions of Mango Hill and North Lakes should expect construction to commence in the third quarter of 2016 and the remaining areas of Mango Hill will have their construction be‌ginning in the second half of 2017 with fibre to the node technology being completed by 2018.

During the first half of 2016, areas of Rothwell, Clontarf, Kippa-Ring, Margate, Newport, Redcliffe, Scarborough and Woody Point work will have their NBN connected via Hybrid Fibre-coaxial (Pay TV) cable. Carseldine with be connected with the same network by the second half of 2016.

Griffin and Burpengary East are expecting to have commencement of construction of Fibre to the Node to begin in the third quarter of 2016.

The remaining areas of the Petrie Division including: Deception Bay, Bracken Ridge, Bald Hills, Aspley, Bridgeman Downs, Fitzgibbon and other areas of suburbs that weren’t included in previous construction dates are expected to be starting construction in the the second half of 2017. Connections to premises for these regions will include Fibre to the node, Fibre to the premises and Hybrid Fibre-coaxial.

NBN Delivery Community Forum

Questions raised included whether businesses could expect any extra hidden charges in relation to the transition to the new network, the timeline for the roll out of advertising to inform residents when they will be required to make the switch to the network with their providers and wastage of tax payer money in the haste to roll out NBN services. Concerns were raised regarding the reliability of the old copper network to be utilised, to be assured that they will be effective or replaced where necessary.

It is expected that the National Broadband Network will be in effect in over 66,000 homes and businesses in the Petrie Eletorate by September 2018 and all of Australia will be on the network by 2020.
