On Wednesday 22nd April our new Mayor and 12 Local Councillors officially took office with seven of the thirteen Council positions having new representation.
The newly elected Mayor and Councillors could not meet as a group due to social distancing requirements.
Councillors took the Declaration of Office in front of CEO Greg Chemello, on a rotation spaced 15 minutes apart.
The new Moreton Bay Regional Council is:

“Having met with all our councillors to discuss their priorities and ideas for our region, I’m pleased that they are collectively focussed on the immediate need for financial support and economic recovery, as our region fights to come back from coronavirus.
“I’m very pleased to have six returning councillors bringing their experience back to the chamber, and six new councillors bringing fresh ideas with them.
“I’d particularly like to welcome our three new female Councillors – Jodie Shipway (Div 4), Sandra Ruck (Div 5) and Cath Tonks (Div 9) – increasing female representation in our team of 12 up to five alongside Brooke Savige (Div 1) and Denise Sims (Div 7).
“I also want to thank the community for putting their faith in me to lead through this uncertain time.
“When we started this campaign, we didn’t know we’d be hit with the global pandemic that is COVID-19. So, locals have certainly made the right choice in electing an experienced councillor and a safe set of hands. That’s critically important at an uncertain time like this.
“I promise locals that my door and the door of every councillor you have elected will always be open to people who have their hearts in this community and have ideas on how we can get through this challenging time together.”
“We may be living in uncertain times and no one knows what the world will look like on the other side, but between the experience of our returning councillors and the fresh ideas of our new councillors, I think we already have the foundations for success.
“My door will always be open to anyone who has ideas on how we can do things differently here in Moreton Bay Region.”
Mayor Flannery said that the community had to be at the heart of every economic, strategic, and stimulus decision they make in the Chamber and he has committed to leading an open and accountable Council that’s united in its focus on economic recovery.

On Wednesday, 19th February, Laurence Christie and Keith King of the Mango Hill Progress Association, met with Fire & Emergency Services Minister Craig Crawford and senior planning officers of the Emergency Services Department in Brisbane to push for a Fire Station to be built in Mango Hill/North Lakes.
The specific aim was to convince the Minister to put aside land now for a future Fire Station while that land was still available.
Emergency Dept Planners advised the Association that the Mango Hill and North Lakes communities are serviced by a ring of Fire Stations at Petrie, Redcliffe and Bracken Ridge with an Auxiliary Station at Deception Bay.
Minister Crawford was appraised of the many years of concerns of the Association that despite the existing Fire Stations, in two recent fires in North Lakes (2016) and Mango Hill (Oct 2019), fire appliances had arrived within the bare minimum set time for arrival (15 minutes). In both cases, the houses had been almost totally destroyed.
The following points were raised by the Association at the
• The Mango Hill / North Lakes population has grown rapidly from 9068 in 2006 to 30,105 at the 2016 Census with a projected population of 70,000 by 2036).
• Along with the increasing density of houses, traffic congestion on our highways, the Mango Hill Progress Association considers that the need for a local Fire station is now essential and should be considered for inclusion in forward planning capital works programs for new Fire Stations.
• The Emergency Services Department should purchase a site for the Station while land is available.
At our AGM, later that night, Chris Whiting advised members that he considered that the “seed had been planted” and that he was confident that the case put forward by the association was a solid one which he would continue to push for within State Government.
The Mango Hill Progress Association will continue to advocate for a Fire Station in Mango Hill/North Lakes and thanks our local State members, Chris Whiting (Bancroft) & Steven Miles (Murrumba) for organizing the meeting with Minister Crawford.

For people in the Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Southeast Coast and parts of the Central West and Maranoa and Warrego Forecast Districts.

Heavy rain and damaging wind gusts are currently affecting the Central Coast and Whitsundays and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts, slowly extending southwards.
Synoptic Situation:
At 11am EST Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie was located over inland central Queensland about 130 kilometres west-northwest of Moranbah. The system is expected to continue moving southwards over the central interior of the state today before tracking southeastwards during Thursday.
Impacts:
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie will continue to generate areas of very heavy rain over the Central Coast and Whitsundays and Central Highlands and Coalfields districts today. Currently the heaviest rainfall is occurring over the areas between inland from Mackay. A seperate Severe Thunderstorm Warning is current for heavy rainfall for areas over the Central Coast district. Widespread daily rainfall totals of 150 to 250 mm are expected, with significantly higher totals possible locally. This rainfall will likely be very intense at times, leading to a risk of localised flash flooding. Locations that may be affected include Mackay, Sarina, Carmila, Yeppoon, Moranbah, Clermont, Emerald, Springsure and Rolleston.
The focus for heavy rain will then shift south and extend into the southeastern quarter of the state during Thursday, with further daily rainfall totals in excess of 200mm possible.
This rainfall is likely to lead to major river flooding over a broad area this week, and a Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Ayr and the New South Wales border, extending inland to parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Maranoa and Warrego, and Darling Downs and Granite Belt forecast districts.
Damaging winds, with peak gusts of around 100km/h, are occurring in the warning area, particularly about the coast and islands and also over higher ground inland. Currently the strongest wind gusts are affecting areas north of about Emerald to St Lawrence though the possibility of damaging wind gusts should shift to the remaining warning area as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie tracks south southeastwards tonight. Into Thursday the focus for damaging wind gusts will likely shift to the Capricornia coast and then possibly to the remaining coast near and south of Fraser Island during Thursday afternoon and evening.
Water levels on the high tide could exceed the highest tide of the year, but not exceed warning criteria. Therefore the warning for abnormally high tide is cancelled.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Wednesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau’s website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 219. The Bureau and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
The southern and eastern communities of Mango Hill (Halpine Lake, Capestone and the Mango Hill Estate will remain in the modified electorate of Murrumba, to be contested by Steven Miles MP, whilst The Mango Hill Village will move into the new electorate of Bancroft, to be contested by Chris Whiting MP, joining up with North Lakes residents and north to the Caboolture River and including the suburbs of Burpengary & Morayfield, east of the Bruce Highway.
Formed out of the burgeoning seat of Murrumba, the new Electorate of Bancroft is named after Mr Joseph Bancroft, a well-known Doctor who lived in Deception Bay towards the end of the 1800’s.
The Mango Hill Progress Association has written to the Electoral Commission of Qld to advocate for a Dual Polling Booth for the Mango Hill Community Centre given that a great number of residents from south and east of Anzac Ave (including Griffin) have voted at the Mango Hill Community Centre since it was established in 1990.
A Dual Polling Booth will allow electors from both Bancroft and Murrumba the opportunity to vote at a centre they have known for many years, while avoiding the frustration and delay of standing in line to lodge an Absentee Vote or being directed to another Polling Booth.
Australia Post have stated that a notice will appear in the local newspaper and a sign will be placed on the Post Box for a minimum of 30 days to allow local residents to raise any issues.
Australia Post have advised that usable levels should generally exceed 25 letters per day and that this Post Box has significantly lower volumes than that required to maintain the service.
Big Local North Lakes and The Mango Hill Progress Association strongly encourage residents to use this facility as the saying of “use it or lose it”, very much applies.
• “Not only is the mailbox an area icon, it is one of the most convenient and safe mailboxes we have utilised. People can park their vehicle off the road, take a few steps to the box and safely drop their mail.
• “Through” traffic is not inconvenienced.
• As well, Mailbox customers do not have to queue for a car-parking space and attempt to merge with thru traffic – unlike many roadside mailboxes which can create a traffic hazard.
